DMEK is considered standard of care for surgical treatment of Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy and will likely, in 2024, finally overtake Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty as the most commonly performed endothelial keratoplasty technique. Gerrit Melles has truly been one of the most in influential innovators in corneal transplantation over the past 25 years. His initial paper describing posterior lamellar keratoplasty that started the modern era of selective endothelial transplantation is also one of the most highly cited papers in Cornea, still within the top 10 in 2024.[…]” (Cornea 2024;43:1467)
